【 摘 要 】
The authors focus on infant and childmortality in rural areas of India. They construct a flexibleduration model framework that allows for frailty at multiplelevels and interactions between the child's age andindividual socioeconomic, and environmental characteristics. The model is estimated using the 1998-99 wave of the IndianNational Family and Health Survey. The estimated resultsshow that socioeconomic and environmental characteristicshave significantly different effects on mortality rates atdifferent ages. These are particularly important immediatelyafter birth. The authors use the estimated model for policyexperiments. These indicate that child mortality can bereduced substantially, particularly by improving theeducation of women and reducing indoor air pollution causedby cooking fuels. In addition, providing access toelectricity and sanitation facilities can reduceunder-five-years mortality rates significantly.
