【 摘 要 】
The main purpose of this paper is tosummarize the information currently available on cocaineproduction and trafficking. The paper starts by describingthe available data on cocaine production and trade, thecollection methodologies (if available) used by differentsources, the main biases in the data, and the accuracy ofdifferent data sources. Next, it states some of the keyempirical questions and hypotheses regarding cocaineproduction and trade and takes a first look at how well thedata match these hypotheses. The paper states some of themain puzzles in the cocaine market and studies some of thepossible explanations. These puzzles and empirical questionsshould guide future research on the key determinants ofillicit drug production and trafficking. Finally, the paperstudies the different policies that producer countries haveadopted to fight against cocaine production and the roleconsumer countries play in the implementation of anti-drug policies.
