【 摘 要 】
The authors use comparable micro levelpanel data for 14 countries and a set of identicallyspecified empirical models to investigate the relationshipbetween exports and productivity. The overall results are inline with the big picture that is by now familiar from theliterature: Exporters are more productive than non-exporterswhen observed and unobserved heterogeneity are controlledfor, and these exporter productivity premia tend to increasewith the share of exports in total sales; there is strongevidence in favour of self-selection of more productivefirms into export markets, but nearly no evidence in favourof the learning-by-exporting hypothesis. The authorsdocument that the exporter premia differ considerably acrosscountries in identically specified empirical models. In ameta-analysis of their results the authors find thatcountries that are more open and have more effectivegovernment report higher productivity premia. However, thelevel of development per se does not appear to be anexplanation for the observed cross-country differences.
