【 摘 要 】

Many key development outcomes depend onwomen's ability to negotiate favorable intrahouseholdallocations of resources. Yet it has been difficult toclearly identify which policies can increase women'sbargaining power and result in better outcomes. This paperreviews both the analytical frameworks and the empiricalevidence on the importance of women's bargaining power. It argues that there is sufficient evidence from rigorousstudies to conclude that women's bargaining power doesaffect outcomes. But in many specific instances, thequantitative evidence cannot rigorously identify causality. In these cases, a combination of quantitative andqualitative evidence may suggest policy levers. Takentogether, there are sufficient data in place to support agreatly expanded focus on intrahousehold outcomes andbargaining power. Additional data at the individual levelwill allow for further and more detailed research. A growingliterature supports the current conventional wisdom --namely, that the patterns of evidence suggest thatwomen's education, incomes, and assets all areimportant aspects of women's bargaining power.
