This short country report, a result oflarger Information for Development Program(infoDev)-supported survey of Information and CommunicationTechnologies (ICT) in education in Africa, provides ageneral overview of current activities and issues related toICT use in education in the country. Guinea-Bissau is asmall country of fewer than two million inhabitants. Civilwar in the late 1990s destroyed its infrastructure andeconomy and displaced hundreds of thousands of itspopulation. Recent multi-party elections installed acivilian regime in 2005. A key priority of the newgovernment is infrastructure reconstruction, including thoserelated to education, telecommunication, and electric power.The government of Guinea-Bissau has obtained assistance fromthe African Development Bank and the World Bank torehabilitate some of the destroyed infrastructure. Thatsaid, the state of telecommunications is quite poor and theelectricity supply is sporadic.
