【 摘 要 】
The importance of land rental foroverall economic development has long been recognized intheory, yet empirical evidence on the productivity andequity impacts of such markets and the extent to which theyrealize their potential has been scant. Representative datafrom China's nine most important agricultural provincesillustrate the impact of rental markets on households'economic strategies and welfare, and the productivity ofland use at the plot level. Although there are positiveimpacts in each of these dimensions, transaction costsconstrain participation by many producers, thus preventingrental markets from attaining their full potential. Thepaper identifies factors that increase transaction costs andprovides a rough estimate of the productivity and equityimpacts of removing them.
