【 摘 要 】
Although a large theoretical literaturediscusses the possible inefficiency of sharecroppingcontracts, the empirical evidence on this phenomenon hasbeen ambiguous at best. Household-level fixed-effectestimates from about 8,500 plots operated by households thatown and sharecrop land in the Ethiopian highlands providesupport for the hypothesis of Marshallian inefficiency. Atthe same time, a factor adjustment model suggests that theextent to which rental markets allow households to attaintheir desired operational holding size is extremely limited. Our analysis points towards factor market imperfections (norental for oxen), lack of alternative employmentopportunities, and tenure insecurity as possible reasonsunderlying such behavior, suggesting that, rather thanworrying almost exclusively about Marshallian inefficiency,it is equally warranted to give due attention to the policyframework within which land rental markets operate.
