Malawi remains one of the world'sleast developed countries, with more than 65 percent of itspopulation of over 11 million below the poverty line. As inmost countries in the region, biomedical health facilitiesand services are in very short supply, especially in therural communities of Malawi-about 85 percent of itspopulation. The HIV/AIDS epidemic has exacerbated thealready strained scarce resources available within thenational health delivery system. In the absence of adequatebiomedical health services, most rural Malawians continue torely on traditional, largely plant-derived treatments fortheir primary health care needs.
