【 摘 要 】

Using panel data for the fourteen majorstates of India over the 1980-2000 period, the authorsestimate the effect of human capital endowment on theperformance of the state economies. They find that greateravailability of skilled workers had a positive andsignificant impact on output in the service sectors. They donot find any such effect for the manufacturing sectors. Thepaper shows that the differential effect on services andmanufacturing arises because service sectors are more skill intensive.
