Around the world-not just in LatinAmerica -central bankers are looking uneasily at the growingshare of foreign currency-denominated deposits in theirbanking systems. They have a sense that these deposits maynot be a good thing, or at least may be a symptom ofweaknesses in their financial structures or policies. Insome countries spontaneous dollarization of the bankingsystem has long been extensive and well known; in othercountries it has been a creeping affair.
