Increasing attention is being given toindigenous innovation in agriculture - the process by whichfarmers develop new and better ways of doing things, primarily using local resources and on their own initiative, without pressure or direct support from formal research ordevelopment agents. In this process, farmers have developednot only better farming techniques but also better ways oforganizing themselves. In the Yatenga Region of BurkinaFaso, local improvements on a traditional farming techniquehave become very widespread, largely on account of theinnovativeness of farmers in developing their own forms offarmer-to-farmer extension. They have found highly effectiveways of spreading their ideas and encouraging other farmersto try them out.
