Women have always participated to someextent in combat, but several recent wars have seen themfighting on the front lines. And while the roles of femaleexcombatants vary widely, the women seem to share oneunfortunate characteristic: limited access to benefits whenpeace and demobilization come. This is also true for girlsabducted for sexual services and the families ofex-combatants in the receiving community. These groups areoften neglected during demobilization and reintegration; orat best, women, men, boys, and girls may receive equalbenefits but are treated as a homogenous group, whichprevents their specific needs from being addressed. Somethink that the first objective of a DRP (Demobilization andReintegration Program) is to have a positive impact on thepeace dividend. Another goal often mentioned is thereduction of military expenditures for budgetary reasons. However, others argue that the DRP objectives should be toassist vulnerable excombatans.
