【 摘 要 】
Product variety plays an important rolein the theoretical work on monopolistic competition andtrade, and recent empirical work has begun to quantify thisfor aggregate and disaggregate import demands. The authorsdiscuss the measurement of product variety in trade, using abroad cross-section of industrial and developing countriesand disaggregating across sectors. The authors calculate theexport variety of countries in their sales to the UnitedStates, and relate the export variety indexes to countryproductivities. They confirm that countries with greaterproduct variety in exports also have higher productivity. This may be due to their development of and access to these products.
