【 摘 要 】
This paper explores the incentives forbackyarding, an expanding category of urban land-use indeveloping countries that has proliferated South Africa. Thetheoretical model exposes the trade-off faced by thehomeowner in deciding how much backyard land to rent out:loss of yard space consumption in return for a gain inrental income. Under common forms for preferences, thehomeowner's own-consumption of yard space falls as landrent increases, causing more land to be rented tobackyarders. With better job access for backyarders raisingland rent by increasing their willingness-to-pay, theanalysis then predicts that the extent of backyarding willbe higher for parcels with good job access. This hypothesisis tested by combining a satellite- based count of backyarddwellings per parcel with job-access data. The empiricalresults strongly confirm the prediction that better jobaccess increases the extent of backyarding.
