The ninth Sustainable Development Goaladvises countries to build resilient infrastructure, promoteinclusive and sustainable industrialization and fosterinnovation. Industry has historically been one of the mostimportant pillars of economic and social development, buttraditional resource-intensive and heavily pollutingproduction is no longer sustainable in the face of climatechange. If the path of industrial growth is not redirectedimmediately and effectively, reaching the target set in the2015 Paris Agreement to avoid dangerous climate change bylimiting global warming to well below two degrees celsius, will become unrealizable. The good news is that recentpractices demonstrate how industry could be a big part ofthe solution for climate mitigation and inclusive, sustainable development. The unprecedented task presented inParis, to decarbonize, globally introduces challenges butalso enormous opportunities for industries as they seek agreener path to production while remaining globallycompetitive. This report helps chart that path to industrialcompetitiveness through policy and technology interventionsthat improve industrial operations. At the same time itexplores ways that industrial products can become greenerthrough public standards while companies and countriesmaintain, and even increase, competitiveness. Theinformation is directed toward government leaders, policymakers, and multilateral institutions in the fields ofenergy, climate mitigation, and sustainable development. Thereport’s recommendations to policy makers are based oncomprehensive case studies and quantitative and qualitative analyses.
