Afghanistan has one of the youngestpopulations in Asia, creating strong demographic pressure inthe labor market. Around 400,000 youth will continue toenter the labor force annually during the next years. Giventhe significant slowdown the country’s economic activity,the pace at which jobs are generated is and will beinsufficient. Through an analysis of labor supply anddemand, thispaper estimates substantial net emigrationpressures for the years 2016–2030, on the order of around200,000 people per year. The projected profile of futuremigrants is one of young men with some basic level ofeducation and from middle-income households. In addition tothis economic migration, other factors like increasedinsecurity, conflict, and natural disasters might furtheraccentuate these dynamics.
