The call for urgent action to addressclimate change and develop more sustainable modes of energydelivery is generally recognized. It is also apparent thatbatteries, both in the transportation and the power sectors, need to play a predominant role if the global community isto limit global warming to two degrees Celsius. Simply put, nations’ efforts will focus largely on electrifyingtransportation systems to be supported by power systems thatdeliver low carbon energy, using a range of renewabletechnologies. Stationary batteries will play a critical rolein not only providing direct energy services, but also inacting as backup providers when renewable resources are onlyable to provide intermittent services, dependent on localclimatic and other circumstances. The objective of thisreport is to provide an overview of the state of affairswith regards to reuse and recycling of lithium-ion or Li-ionbatteries, in order to assess if and to what extentdeveloping countries can and should play a larger role inthis burgeoning area.
