This report presents a concise review ofthe major environmental and natural resources issues at theglobal and national level over the coming two decades. Theenvironmental issues reviewed include air pollution anddeterioration of air quality, greenhouse gas emissions andclimate change, water quality, scarcity and access, land andsoil degradation, deforestation and forest degradation,natural disaster, loss of biodiversity and protected areas,and governance and institutions for environmental andnatural resource management. Besides providing anenvironment outlook, the report tackles the issue ofmonitoring also from the supply side. It identifies therelevant data and indicator sets available at the globallevel and country level to capture the global and locallyrelevant environmental issues with the underlying objectiveof pinpointing at data gaps. It concludes with a set ofrecommendations for moving forward on the monitoring agenda.Overall, the threats from climate change caused by GreenHouse Gas (GHG) emissions, biodiversity loss, waterpollution and scarcity as well as pressure on land as wellas worsening ocean's state and biodiversity have to betaken under close observation in the period over the next 20years. The environment challenges that the world faces arenot trivial and some of them require immediate action.Action, in turn, requires reliable and accurate information.The second part of the report looks at information from thesupply side. It identifies the relevant data and indicatorsets available at the global level and country level tocapture the global and locally relevant environmental issueswith the underlying objective of informing and advisingdecision making and to identify the data gaps.
