【 摘 要 】
Almost a decade after large land-basedinvestment for agriculture increased sharply, opinions onits impact continue to diverge, partly because (positive ornegative) spillovers on neighboring smallholders have neverbeen rigorously assessed. Applying methods from the urbanliterature on Mozambican data suggests that changes in thenumber and area of large farms within 25 or 50 kilometers ofthese investments raised use of improved practices, animaltraction, and inputs by small farmers without increasingcultivated area or participation in output, credit, andnonfarm labor markets; or, once these factors are controlledfor, yields. The limited scope and modest size of theestimated benefits point toward considerable unrealizedpotential. The paper discusses ways to systematicallyexplore the size of such potential and the extent to whichit is realized.
