The overall objective of the study is toexplore the current effectiveness of certification andverification schemes in Southeast Asia to strengthen thelegality and sustainability of future forest management,wood processing and related trade. It analyzes how thelinkages among credible certification and verificationschemes and the enforcement of forest laws can bestrengthened in Southeast Asia. The analysis will inparticular focus on five case study countries, which areimportant producer or wood processing hubs in the region:Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. Inparticular, the study assesses the status and perceivedcredibility of certification and verification schemes inSoutheast Asia and illustrates the extent to which theyoffer proof of compliance with national laws andregulations. The analysis also explores the potential impactcertification could have on facilitating law enforcement andinfluencing market practices and sector governance. Finally,it illustrates the potential role certification could playin determining a company's qualifications withfinancial institutions and, hence, its access to finance.
