How to Protect and Promote the Nutrition of Mothers and Children in Latin America and the Caribbean : Priority Nutrition Interventions and Cross-Cutting Approaches
This section describes the prioritynutrition interventions and cross-cutting approaches thatare essential to promote and protect the nutritional statusof mothers and children as well as a country's humancapital in the short-, medium-, and long-terms. The mainthrust of the guidance is that: (1) policies give specialattention to the critical 'window of opportunity'represented by the first 1,000 days of life; (2) policiesare aligned with the latest international recommendations innutrition; (3) policies and interventions of key sectors arecoordinated to provide synergy of action; and (4) resourcesallocated for disaster prevention and emergency managementare invested in the most cost-effective way. Monitoring is acontinuous process of collecting and analyzing informationto better understand how well a program is operating againstexpected outputs and to allow remedial intervention tocorrect failures. Situation monitoring measures the changeor lack of change, in a condition or a set of conditions andincludes monitoring of the wider context. Performancemonitoring, on the other hand, measures progress inachieving specific results in relation to an implementationplan. Evaluation is a systematic and objective assessmentthat attempts to determine the worth or significance of anintervention, strategy, or policy. It is used to appraisethe effectiveness of an intervention to determine if itmeets its goals, to estimate its results or impact, and toidentify its costs vs. its benefits. Promote optimalbreastfeeding practices. Provide all pregnant women withdaily iron-folic acid supplements for at least six months.Provide deforming treatment to pregnant women,preschool-aged children, and school-aged children in areaswhere hookworms or soil-transmitted helminthes areprevalent. Establish strong links between agricultural, foodsecurity, social protection and nutrition policies that canbe used to inform a robust communication program regardingmaternal diet and critical infant and young child feedingpractices. Support diversified agricultural production toincrease availability of nutrient-dense foods, particularlythose of animal sources.
