【 摘 要 】
While scholars agree on the importanceof land rental markets for structural transformation inrural areas, evidence on the extent and nature of theiroperation, including potential obstacles to their improvedfunctioning, remains limited. This study useshousehold-level data from six countries to start fillingthis gap and derive substantive as well as methodologicallessons. The paper finds that rental markets transfer landto land-poor, labor-rich, and more productive producersthroughout. But vast cross-country variation in transfersand the fact that female managers could possibly improvetheir income by leasing out land point towards barriers toparticipation that policy might address. Methodological andsubstantive conclusions are derived.
