【 摘 要 】
Violent conflict and instability affectmen and women in heterogeneous ways, includingdifferentiated impacts on economic, social, physical, andmental well-being. This study assesses the impact of thepost-2013 conflict in South Sudan on adolescent girls andyoung women. The analysis uses data from the AdolescentGirls Initiative endline survey and the Armed ConflictLocation & Event Data to measure conflict exposure usingconstructed cluster-level, self-reported, and externalconflict exposure variables. The impact of conflict exposureis then estimated on a set of socioeconomic outcomes ofadolescent girls by comparing exposed and non-exposedclusters before and after the conflict. The results suggestthat girls from clusters more affected by the conflict hadstatistically different outcomes compared with girls fromless affected clusters. Specifically, there is strongevidence that the conflict negatively affected outcomesrelated to income opportunities, aspirations, marriage, andhousehold characteristics, but increased self-reportedempowerment and entrepreneurial potential scores. Theresults indicate that impacts on labor supply, personalmotivation, household conditions, and other forms ofvictimization are important channels through which conflictnegatively impacts adolescent girls.
