This paper will explore a variety ofpsychosocial issues in DDR impacting on ex-combatants aswell as communities affected by violence, and put forthrecommendations for improving psychosocial support in futureDDR programming. Part one presents background informationfor contextual understanding of the challenges faced byex-combatants and community members affected byconflict-related trauma, including ways in whichpsychosocial problems present in the lives of ex-combatants,the short and long-term impacts of trauma on theviolence-affected individual, and the costs of notaddressing this critical issue. Part two explores keyapproaches and interventions, particularly in Somaliland andRwanda, attempted by DDR implementers and the results ofsuch interventions. Finally, part three describes keychallenges in addressing psychosocial issues in DDR and putsforth a set of recommendations based on the contextualunderstanding of the issue and the real-world application ofdevelopment interventions.
