【 摘 要 】
This paper examines the relationshipbetween maternal exposure to violence during pregnancy andnewborn birthweight. The paper exploits variation in thetiming of exposure and in the geographic location ofexpectant mothers across Colombian municipalities. Exposureto violence in early pregnancy had a large negative impacton birthweight, primarily for boys, and the effect wasmitigated by their mothers' education. Girls wereaffected mainly by shocks in later stages of gestation.Furthermore, their mothers were more likely to engage inpotentially harmful behaviors during the pregnancy. Thisevidence exposes the importance of parental responses inshaping the effect of exposure to violence on newborn health.
