【 摘 要 】

Using a rich data set of primary schoolstudents, this paper estimates the effects of immigrantconcentration in the classroom on the academic achievementof natives. In contrast with previous contributions, itexploits rare information on age-at-migration to estimateseparate spillover effects by duration of stay of immigrantclassmates. To identify treatment effects, it usescohort-by-cohort deviations in immigrant concentrationwithin schools combined with attractive features of theDutch school system. Overall, the paper finds no effect ofthe concentration of immigrant students on natives'test scores. However, although immigrant students who havebeen in the country for some time have virtually no effecton natives, the analysis finds a small negative effect ofrecent immigrants in the classroom on natives' testscores. This effect significant only for language testscores, but insignificant for mathematics test scores. Whensignificant, effect sizes are quite small compared to othereducational interventions and classroom peer effectsestimated in other contexts.
