【 摘 要 】
Health care access is a challenge inrural areas in Africa. On the demand side, rural people areoften poor, and transport connectivity is typically bad inrural and remote areas. Because of limited transportconnectivity, the quality of health care services providedis also often compromised. In Madagascar, the poor conditionof the road network has long hampered the sustainability ofthe medical supply chain in rural areas. The paper showsthat people's demand for health care services isaffected not only by local transport connectivity, but alsoavailability of medical supplies at the health facilitylevel, which is also determined by primary and secondaryroad network connectivity. This in turn further suppressespeople's demand in rural areas. The results alsoindicate that it is important to ensure financialaffordability among the poor, which is found to be one ofthe most crucial constraints.
