【 摘 要 】

The World Health Organization attributesabout 3.3 million annual premature deaths to outdoor airpollution in low- and middle-income countries. Comprehensivepollution monitoring in urban areas has been too costly formany developing countries; yet sparse information hashindered cost-effective pollution management strategies.Global information technologies offer a potential escapefrom this information trap, but their accuracy remainsuncertain. This paper uses ground-based measures of fineparticulates and nitrogen dioxide, provided by the CAMS-3Darussalam monitoring station in Dhaka, Bangladesh, to testthree global technologies: the European Space Agency’sSentinel-5P, the National Aeronautics and SpaceAdministration’s Moderate Resolution ImagingSpectroradiometer, and Google Traffic. The results indicatethat all three global technologies can provide usefulinformation for extension of air pollution measurementbeyond the few areas that are currently monitored by groundstations. Each technology tracks ground-based fineparticulates measures with high significance, and theEuropean Space Agency’s Sentinel-5P and Google Trafficperform similarly for ground-based nitrogen dioxidemeasures.Google Traffic can provide accurate tracking athigher spatial and temporal resolution than the satellitesources, but only for emissions from motor vehicles in majormetro areas. The Moderate Resolution ImagingSpectroradiometer and the European Space Agency’sSentinel-5P capture the effects of emissions from othersources at all locations.
