【 摘 要 】
Management practices matter for firmperformance. As energy is one input in firm production, management practices may interact with energy use. Using acomprehensive firm-level database covering 31 countries, this study documents the link between structured managementpractices, energy use, and firm performance. The paperreports several findings. First, although management isnegatively correlated with energy expenditure, it bears apositive (or 0) relationship with physical energy use, suggesting that management effort is directed toward savingcosts but not reducing environmental impact. These resultsare primarily driven by the manufacturing sector. Second, among the structured management practices examined, thoserelating to target-setting are associated with reducedenergy expenditure intensity. Third, generic managementpractices are correlated with greater discipline aroundenergy management. Finally, while generic practices arecorrelated with stronger firm performance in manufacturingand services, energy-centric practices show a positiveassociation only in services. Vast heterogeneity in adoptionand outcomes suggests that targeted approaches to encourageenergy management practices in firms may be more effectivethan uniform ones.
