【 摘 要 】
Evidence on the impacts of a large-scaleexpansion in pre-primary education is limited and mostlycircumscribed to high- and middle-income nations. This studyestimates the effects of such an expansion on progression inprimary school in rural communities in Guatemala, where thenumber of pre-primary schools increased from about 5,300 to11,500 between 1998 and 2005. Combining administrative andpopulation census data in a difference-in-differencesframework, the analysis finds that access to pre-primaryeducation increased by 2.4 percentage points the proportionof students that progress adequately and attend sixth gradeby age 12. These positive although limited effects suggestthe need for complementary actions to produce substantialimprovements in adequate progression.
