【 摘 要 】
The Dominican Republic is highly exposedto adverse natural events putting the country at risk oflosing hard-won economic, social, and environmental gainsdue to the impacts of disasters. This study uses monthlynightlight composites in conjunction with a wind field modelto econometrically estimate the impact of tropical cycloneson local economic activity in the Dominican Republic since1992. It is found that the negative impact of storms lastsup to 15 months after the strike, with the largest effectobserved after nine months. Translating the reduction innightlight intensity into monetary losses by relating it toquarterly gross domestic product suggests that on averagethe storms reduced gross domestic product by about US$1.1billion (4.5 percent of gross domestic product in 2000 and1.5 percent in 2016).
