【 摘 要 】
This paper investigates differences inthe composition of employment between exporting andnon-exporting firms. In particular, it asks whetherexporting firms hire more engineers relative to blue-collarworkers than non-exporting firms. In a stylizedpartial-equilibrium model, firms produce goods of varyingquality and exporters tend to produce higher quality goods, which are intensive in engineers relative to blue-collarworkers. Firms are heterogeneous and more productive firmsbecome exporters and have a higher demand for engineers. Thepaper provides causal evidence in support of these theoriesusing the Chilean Encuesta Nacional Industrial Anual, anannual census of manufacturing firms. The results from aninstrumental variable estimator suggest that Chileanexporters indeed utilize a higher share of engineers overblue-collar workers.
