【 摘 要 】
Improving the productivity ofsmallholder farms in Sub-Saharan Africa offers the bestchance to reduce poverty among this generation of ruralpoor, by building on the limited resources farminghouseholds already possess. It is also the best and shortestpath to meet rising food needs. Using examples fromfarmers' maize and rice fields, and comparisons withAsia, this paper examines why the set of technologiespromoted to date have produced localized successes ratherthan transformational change. The paper explains thelimitations of alternative policies that are not centered onsmall farms. It provides indicative examples of howresource-management technologies can supplementseed-fertilizer technologies to speed an African Green Revolution.
