【 摘 要 】
This paper uses a unique data set toanalyze the migration dynamics of refugees, returnees, andinternally displaced people during the Northern Maliconflict. Individuals were interviewed monthly using mobilephones. The results cast light on the characteristics ofthese three groups before and after the crisis. In addition, the paper tests how employment status, security, andexpectations affect people's willingness to go backhome. The findings suggest that the decision to return isaffected by a comparison of (opportunity) costs andbenefits, but also by other factors. Individuals who areemployed while displaced are less willing to go back to theNorth, as are better educated individuals or those receivingassistance. The opposite is true for those whose ethnicityis Songhai, as well as for those who originated from Kidal. The results show that higher educated individuals performedbetter when displaced and in case they decide to return, they find a job more easily.
