【 摘 要 】
This paper proposes a new measure ofgrowth in shared prosperity, based on shifts in populationshares of different income groups over time. This measurecomplements the definition of shared prosperity recentlyproposed by the World Bank in which income growth of thebottom 40 percent is examined. The new measure’s strengthsarise from its close ties to countries’ national povertylines and poverty measures, its focus on inclusion of thevulnerable population, and its identification of apopulation segment that is neither poor nor at significantrisk of falling into poverty. The paper also offers atypology of scenarios for tracking shared prosperity underthis measure. It provides illustrative examples using surveydata from India, the United States, and Vietnam for themid-to-late 2000s. Estimation results comparing the twoapproaches with measuring the evolution of shared prosperityare qualitatively consistent, and suggest that during thisperiod, Vietnam enjoyed the greatest expansion in sharedprosperity, followed by India and then the United States.
