【 摘 要 】

This paper investigates the impact ofglobal value chain participation on productivity, using dataon trade in value added from the World Input-OutputDatabase. The results based on a panel estimation covering13 sectors in 40 countries over 15 years suggest thatparticipation in global value chains is a significant driverof labor productivity. Backward participation in globalvalue chains, that is, the use of imported inputs to producefor exports, emerges as particularly important. An increaseby 10 percent in the level of global value chainparticipation increased average productivity by close to 1.7 percent.
