Increasing access to finance for VerySmall, Small and Medium Enterprises (VSEs/SMEs) has becomean important goal for many governments and developmentagencies as VSEs/SMEs are viewed as main drivers of economicgrowth and creators of employment. However, a missing middlebetween the ceiling of MFI lending and the segment definedby banks as SMEs is currently underserved and in somemarkets even unserved, despite the fact that it presents asignificant growth opportunity for MFIs looking to upscaleand/or to grow with their best clients. The report presentsthe findings of Sanabel’s and IFC’s VSE Survey which aimedto identify what has been done to date to serve the VSEsegment, and how successful MFIs as well as other players inthe region have been in catering to this segment andupscaling lending activities. This report represents thesecond report in a series of leadership papers, Voices,developed by Sanabel, the Microfinance Network of ArabCountries, and the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
