【 摘 要 】
Intra-household inequalities have longbeen a source of concern for policy design, but there isvery little evidence. The current practice of ignoringinequality within households could lead to anunderestimation of both overall inequality and povertylevels, as well as to the misclassification of someindividuals as regards to their poverty status. Using anovel survey for Senegal in which consumption data werecollected at a disaggregated level, this paper quantifiesthese various effects. In total, two opposing effects, oneon mean and one on inequality, compensate each other interms of the overall poverty rate, but individual povertystatuses are affected. Intra-household consumptioninequalities accounts for 14 percent of inequality inSenegal. The authors uncover the fact that householdstructure and organization are key correlates ofintra-household inequality and individual risk of poverty.
