【 摘 要 】
This paper investigates the causalimpact of the change in Brazil’s child labor law of December1998. The change increased the minimum legal age of entryinto the labor force from 14 to 16 years. The analysis usesa difference-in-differences approach to estimate the impactof this change in the law on labor force participation ratesas a whole, as well as for the formal and informal sectorsseparately. The results show that the ban reducedparticipation rates for boys by 4 percentage points and thatthis effect was mostly driven by the informal sector. Noeffect is found for girls.
