On May 9-11, 2002 the members of theParliamentary Network on the World Bank (PNoWB) met in Bern,Switzerland for their Third Annual Conference. The meetingtook place in the Swiss Parliament to mark the tenthanniversary of Swiss membership in the Bretton Woodsinstitutions. The attendance of 104 Members of Parliamentfrom 42 countries helped to firmly establish theParliamentary Network of the World Bank (PNoWB) as aparliamentary sounding board. The meeting underscored theimportant role that Parliamentarians play in internationaldevelopment. In the various sessions of the conference twothemes recurred: implementation and governance. Theparticipants of the conference were challenged by World BankPresident James Wolfensohn to focus on implementing theinternational consensus that emerged from the conferences inDoha and Monterrey and leading up to Johannesburg. He urgedParliamentarians to invest in their relationships with theirgovernments to be able to play an active role inimplementing these development initiatives. At the sametime, participants discussed the role that Parliamentarianscould play to strengthen governance structures in developingcountries to create an environment conducive to the successof development policies.
