Myanmar is rich in natural resources andis a global biodiversity hotspot. Myanmar's forests andfishing industry are two significant contributors to theeconomy, and yet these sectors are also potentially underthreat from over exploitation and mismanagement. Themanagement of solid waste, air pollution, and the use ofplastics provides another growing challenge. In addition,the role of government and other stakeholders in themanagement of these sectors and issues is central to whetherthe government will succeed in reversing the current trendsand be able to find a long-term sustainable solution to theproblem. This report explores the issues and challengesfaced and the legal and institutional context. Through alens of poverty reduction, social inclusion andparticipation, and economic growth, the report tells a storyof an urgent need for institutional support and reform,improvements in the enforcement against illegal extractionof resources, behavior change in all relevant stakeholders,institutional capacity building, increased funding, andimprovements in data collection and analysis. If theserecommendations are acted on, then Myanmar can reverse thenegative trends and lead its environment on a path toward amore sustainable future.
