Escalating in March 2015, the conflictspanning across Yemen has resulted in massive casualties, awave of internally displaced persons, substantialinfrastructure damage, and hampered service delivery acrossboth the economy and society. The business climate acrossYemen has dramatically deteriorated as a result of theconflict, and businesses throughout the country experiencedsevere disruptions that for many firms constituted a forcemajeure situation, hindering their ability to either operateeffectively or plan ahead for the future. Addressing thesechallenges requires substantial effort by the GoY and theinternational community to support the resilience of theprivate sector and prevent its further deterioration andlosses. The loss of private sector wealth and activity ofthis magnitude is part and parcel to the food insecurity, poverty, public health issues, and defunct service provisionthat plagues the war-fatigued population. As such, both inthe future post-conflict setting and at present, engagingand revitalizing the Yemeni private sector is a crucial andindispensable step towards the successful reconstruction andrecovery of Yemen, and the long-term well-being of the population.
