The Country Policy and InstitutionalAssessment (CPIA) Africa report describes the progressAfrican countries are making on strengthening the quality oftheir policies and institutions. Some of the results fromthis report include: The overall quality of policies andinstitutions in countries in Sub-Saharan Africa wasunchanged in 2014, but there was much variation inperformance across countries. More than half the countriesin the region saw a change in their policy environment: 10countries experienced an improvement in their overall CPIAscore, and an equal number saw a deterioration. There weredivergent trends across policy clusters. Economic managementweekend on the back of continuing fiscal policy slippage, asthe sharp drop in commodity prices underscored weaknesses inthe fiscal framework of several of the regions countries. Bycontrast, there was some strengthening in the governancecluster, with nine countries showing improvements in scores,more than twice the number of countries with declines. Thegreatest progress in this cluster was in the quality ofbudgetary and financial management.
