Myanmar is a country in transition andfaces the following main challenges: a) reducing theincidence of poverty and improving human developmentoutcomes, particularly for the poor and vulnerable; and b)addressing the insecurity of incomes and developingmechanisms to reduce exposure to risks and ability to copewith ill-health, disasters, and other shocks. Socialprotection policies and programs can play an important rolein Myanmar’s strategy for poverty reduction andpeople-centered development. Many countries have used arange of programs to achievetheir development goals,particularly on poverty reduction and inclusive growth. Aneffective social protection system can help the poor andvulnerable better manage the opportunities and risks arisingfrom the ongoing reforms, and can help promote household andcommunity resilienceand social cohesion.
