This note aims to provide informationand analysis as a basis for a better understanding of thechallenges and constraints of achieving gender equality inBolivia, with a special focus on the intersectionalitybetween gender and ethnicity. Combining and analyzingexisting evidence and new data, it seeks to documentgender-specific disparities in development outcomes, highlight opportunities and constraints to women’sempowerment, and identify areas in which continuingknowledge gaps are particularly important to understand andaddress gender inequalities. The analysis in this notesuggests that: there is important progress in developmentoutcomes for women, in their access to services and todecision-making spaces; the intersection of gender andethnicity deepens the gaps in some development outcomes inBolivia; women feel discriminated against in differentaspects of their lives, in particular indigenous women. Nothaving access to economic opportunities limit women’sagency; and while women with higher levels of agency areable to more fully take advantage of existing opportunities.
