China has long known more than its fairshare of disasters, including earthquakes, typhoons, floods,and droughts. The good news is that in recent decades, thecountry has made tremendous headway in building itsresilience to disasters. Learning from these efforts will becritical to strengthening resilience building efforts inChina and beyond. In that spirit, this Knowledge Notedistills some lessons from China’s progress in many areas ofdisaster risk management. The note does not comprehensivelycover the country’s achievements but focuses instead ontopics that might be of interest to DRM practitionersglobally. Drawing on expert insights from China’s disasterrisk management community, key themes highlighted by thisnote include: the evolution of national disaster riskreduction (DRR) planning; the rise of demonstrationcommunities; standardization of the disaster lossstatistical system; development of an agricultural insurancesystem; establishment of a catastrophe risk insurancesystem. China has also made significant progress inestablishing a catastrophe risk insurance system that allowsfor local innovations and pilots based on localcharacteristics; Development of a comprehensive space-basedsystem of disaster and emergency monitoring. Amid a changingclimate, China is facing the specter of even moresignificant disaster risks in the future, which may alsobring global cascading impacts. Taking stock of the progressthat has been achieved so far, there is good reason tobelieve that the country will continue to learn and innovatetoward a resilient future.
