Suriname Sector Competitiveness Analysis : Identifying Opportunities and Constraints to Investment and Diversification in the Agribusiness and Extractives Sectors
Suriname is a small economy driven byits abundant natural resources. As the commodity boom endedin recent years, however, the economy began to contract,reflecting Suriname’s dependence on the extractives sector.The Government of Suriname redistributes revenue earned fromgold, oil, and bauxite through significant public sectoremployment. This report seeks to inform the Government ofSuriname about strategies to diversify the economy, with afocus on increasing private investment and removingconstraints to competitiveness in agriculture andextractives. This report provides policy recommendations toguide the Government of Suriname in its efforts to create anenabling environment that facilitates new investment andincreased competitiveness in agriculture and extractives.This report presents the findings of an agribusiness sectorscan to identify subsectors with high potential forinvestment attraction. This report analyzes the enablingenvironment for the extractives sector to identify optionsto attract new investment while at the same time bettergoverning the extractive industries to achieve more positiveand sustainable benefits for the economy and people of Suriname.
