Smallholder farmers in developingcountries face tough challenges to their productivity,growth, and sustainability—including lack of access toaffordable financial products, limited knowledge ofhigh-quality inputs, low usage of technology and marketdata, and poor market links across the value chain. To closethese gaps and help smallholder farmers thrive, socialenterprises are implementing innovative solutions in theagriculture sector to serve them. Social enterprises aredefined as private for-profit, nonprofit, or hybridorganizations that use business methods to advance theirsocial mission. In the case of agriculture, socialenterprises often address a particular pain point in thevalue chain, with the intention that the cost of theirservices or products will be recuperated by the benefits andincome gains that smallholders will achieve. To serve such a“last mile” market, social enterprises will often develop abusiness model that is innovative, cost-effective, andprovides strong value for money in providing qualityservices and products.The purpose of this book is toshowcase the market-based solutions that have proveneffective at supporting smallholders and to synthesize theexperiences of social enterprises around the world.
