20 Years of HIV in Bangladesh : Experiences and Way Forward

This report synthesizes data fromsurveillance, behavioral surveys and published andunpublished research to better understand emerging patternsand trends in the HIV epidemic in Bangladesh. Taking stockof 20 years of experience with HIV in Bangladesh, thisreport summarizes what is known about the coverage andimpact of HIV prevention services, including knowledge onrisk and protective behaviors. The report is divided intonine chapters. Chapter one provides a brief introduction andan overview of the methodology used for this exercise.Chapter two discusses the risks and vulnerabilities of thehigh risk groups including female sex workers, injectingdrug users, male who have sex with male, hijra andoverlapping populations, while chapter three discusses thetrend of the infection amongst partners of high risk groups.Bangladesh continues to report low condom use, which isanalyzed and discussed in chapter four. Structural factorsincluding macro level and intermediate level factors thataffect HIV interventions in Bangladesh are addressed inchapter five. The national HIV response is discussed inchapter six. The report concludes with a discussion of themain findings, with recommendations for the future inchapter seven, and chapter eight and nine are annexes and references.
