This paper provides an account of theEmerging Markets Corporate Governance Research Network(EMCGN) and its first 10 years of activities. The networkwas established under the auspices of the Global CorporateGovernance Forum (now incorporated into IFC’s CorporateGovernance Group). The paper describes the history of theEMCGN and its objective (to stimulate research focused oncorporate governance in emerging markets as well astransition and developing countries); its structure, whichis a joint undertaking of corporate governance researchcenters and internationally recognized scholars, with IFCCorporate Governance acting as its catalyst; and itsmodalities: organizing workshops, holding biennialconferences, and disseminating and communicating research. The paper reviews the quantity and quality of EMCGN’soutput, based on objective research rankings, and itseffects on countries in capacity building and policy changesand development, based on the experiences of participantsand policymakers exposed to its work. Analysis ofpublication data shows that EMCGN has been successful inencouraging research on corporate governance in emergingmarkets in most areas of research identified as critical atthe Network’s inception and through its interactions withpractitioners and policymakers. EMCGN also has beensuccessful in stimulating collaborative research andfacilitating dialogue between scholars and the largercorporate governance community. Its impact on policy andpractice development, inherently difficult to pinpoint, seems to have been most effective when channeled throughefforts of local corporate governance associations withprofessional members to influence relevant policymakers andwhen actively using media to communicate the need for key reforms.
